in practice : Warmth as medicine
Think about where people naturally go to when they need a bit of care.
A bath.
A bowl of soup.
A warm blanket.
Hands wrapped around a warm cup.
Warmth contains us.
Inside that warmth, the nervous system can soften. The body doesn’t feel the need to brace.
The body can drop into rest and digest.
The state where repair, restoration, and healing can take place.
“Here at The Neighbourhood Sauna, we often witness something quite profound: people arriving with heavy bodies and busy minds, and leaving lighter, softer, and more connected to themselves.
While sauna is not a cure or replacement for medical care, the therapeutic power of heat has been used for centuries to support the body’s natural healing processes. Regular sauna bathing can help stimulate circulation, encourage detoxification through sweating, calm the nervous system, and support deep relaxation. That deep rest is often where the body is able to do some of its most important repair work.
Many members of our community come to sauna while navigating complex health journeys, from autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease, to digestive challenges like SIBO or irritable bowel, chronic pain, PTSD and nervous system dysregulation. For many, sauna becomes a supportive cocoon. The consistent warmth, stillness and rhythm of sauna can offer gentle support alongside other treatments.
We’re also seeing sauna increasingly recommended by functional doctors, naturopaths and holistic practitioners as a supportive tool for health.
But what we notice most often is not just physical relief.
People sleep deeper.
Stress softens.
A sense of calm returns.
A small nervous system hug.
For us, sauna is more than heat.
Warmth is the medicine.” - Brigid Payze, Owner & Founder.
The language of warmth can extend beyond the sauna.
It can show up in small moments throughout the day.
Morning sunlight resting on the skin.
A hot shower at the end of the day.
A wheat bag across the lower back before bed.
A bowl of soup on a cool evening.
A cup of tea held between both hands.
Simple gestures of warmth.
Repeated often enough, the body recognise them as signals of safety.
Small rituals that remind the body it can soften.
How warmth takes place at The Neighbourhood Sauna…
In the heat of the sauna.
In the magnesium bath.
Sunlight on the skin.
In the warmth of materials and colour,
the weight of hot stones,
the quiet ritual of tea.
Sometimes warmth is literal.
Sometimes it is the space we create for ourselves and for each other.
The invitation is always the same.
To sit.
To soften.
To let the body be held.
The first exhale.
The shoulders softening.
The body remembering it is safe to let go.
We look forward to holding this space for you soon…
With warmth, The Neighbourhood Sauna Team
This Week’s Mantra
I turn toward warmth.
My body softens.
Warmth becomes my medicine.

The Neighbourhood Sauna acknowledges the Whadjuk Noongar people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather here in Walyalup, now known as Fremantle. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and honour their enduring connection to land, waters and skies. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
